Mud Cloth is handmade fabric using local cotton dyed in mud from the Niger River and leaves from the N’gallama tree. Mud Cloth originated in Mali where it is called Bogolan or Bogolanfini. The Bambara language translates Bogolanfini as: bogo, meaning "earth" or "mud"; lan, meaning "with" or "by means of"; fini, meaning "cloth.”
